Like Mary I first met Ewart on the Birmingham Clinical Psychology course and was one of those ten students she referred to. The course was intense and we were together studying and training in close proximity often for long days over a full two year period. Despite personal and intellectual differences, as Mary rightly says, we remained a largely cohesive group throughout and without doubt Ewart’s character and personality were major contributors to the good natured stability which prevailed. When discussions became heated and intransigence threatened, that soft Scottish accent and lyrical turn of phrase delivered with a wide warm smile and twinkling eyes would bewitch and disarm us all, pricking any bubbles of pomposity or self-righteousness to restore calm and respect for individual differences. Beneath the twinkling eyes and beguiling voice, however, was an extremely lively intellect and a deeply compassionate heart. Patient and gentle, Ewart was also a man of firm moral principles who had the courage to express and enact them to the best of his ability. He was also a very humble man with a great sense of humour and the priceless ability to laugh at himself. He was always great fun to be with and, as Mary said, brimming with enthusiasm for life. As Ewart would have known very well from his earlier years as a classical scholar, the word enthusiasm derives from Greek and refers to the god within. Such was the man. When we asked Ewart to be godfather to our younger daughter, Polly, I remember him questioning his appropriateness for the role as he did not consider himself religious with a capital R. For us he was the perfect choice, a deeply sensitive, thoughtful and morally wise man. Although we have not seen him much in recent years, it was with great sadness that we learnt of his passing. The loss for Denise, Alice, Peter and the rest of his family will be huge. One huge legacy though, for all of us privileged to have known him, must surely be that warmth and enthusiasm, energising and contagious - his simple love of life. John (and Melinda)
